Have you ever wondered what your spirit animal is? I took a quiz recently, and guess what mine is? A Snake! It represents healing, primal energy, and rebirth!

This made me extremely curious, and I dug as deep as I could. Now, I can’t wait to share what I found with you!

What’s the first thing that pops up in your mind when you hear ‘Spirit Animal’? Is it your fur buddy? or a Pokemon character?

For me, it is Pepita and Dante from the movie Coco! Both are Alebrijes (brightly colored folk art sculptures in Mexican culture.) Pepita is shown as the spirit animal of Mama Imelda and Dante, of the protagonist, Miguel. The movie is the best example for us to understand the idea! (If you haven’t watched it yet, I surely suggest that you do. Not just for the reference, but for a visual treat and heart-melting storyline!) 

The concept of a Spirit Animal dates back to an ancient practice of hunters and gatherers. They would carve the outline of their prey on the wall to thank the spirit of the one sacrificed. While this has no direct reference to the definition, it marks the beginning of the unspoken bond we share with certain species, and can’t put a finger on the reason!

A spirit animal is a creature that frequently shows up in our lives at random moments, whether in dreams, or as quick visions. Many cultures believe that it stays with us for life as a guardian spirit. However, the spiritual significance depends on the different symbols that each animal represents in various cultures.

Common Spirit Animals and their Significance

• Turtle: This tiny (but sometimes humungous) fellow is a symbol of patience and determination. According to some cultures, the Earth rests on the shell of the turtle. The slow and steady movement represents your journey toward the spiritual path.
• Dolphin: They are empathetic creatures and represent harmony. If your spirit guide is a dolphin, it shows that you have good communication skills.
• Wolf: It is power and wildness. Many traditions see a wolf as a protector for their entire clan or tribe. Anyone who is guided by a wolf has sharp instincts and can detect danger quickly.
